Sailing InstructionVIMA is a Canadian Yachting Association (CYA) accredited school.

We provide a year round sail training program from our base at Westbay Marine Village, in Victoria’s Inner Harbour. Our Fleet includes, Keelboats and Yachts from 20ft to 40ft.

With immediate access to the Juan de Fuca Strait our programs have regular winds and sea conditions that challenge both the beginner and experienced sailor.

VIMA is commited to increasing safety on our waterways, our instructors pride themselves on good seamanship practice and excellence in boat handling skills

Practical courses run all year round, either locally as day programs 10am-4pm or as live aboard cruises around Vancouver Island.

Courses run to a well recognised learn to sail modular format:

Level 1: Competent Crew EVENING & WEEKEND OFFER

Prerequisites: None

Level 2: Dayskipper EVENING & WEEKEND OFFER

Prerequisites: Competent Crew

Level 3: Intermediate Cruising

Prerequisites: Can consistently demonstrate Dayskipper skills with 10 days as a skipper of a 6-10m yacht, VHF & First Aid

Level 4: Advanced Cruising

Prerequisites: Intermediate Cruising, completed a Coastal Navigation course with at least two seasons/twenty days of cruising, VHF & First Aid

Level 5: Offshore Cruising

Prerequisites: Can demonstrate Advanced Cruising  Skills and Celestial Navigation, VHF, First Aid with at least 600nm as the Skipper of a 8-15m yacht, VHF & First Aid

Your theory portion is assessed by an exam, completed through home study or taken as a classroom session; manuals are provided/recommended on booking your course.

First Aid and VHF Radio courses comprise an important part of your sail training, please ask us about courses running in your area.
